University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine) has released their initial study environmental report regarding their proposed project to construct a new student housing midrise structure.

Not too long ago, UC Irvine replaced the previous Student Center in Mesa Court with a brand new mid-rise multi-use structure known as the Mesa Court Expansion. The new building houses over 500 freshmen students, brought new community spaces, and a new dining common.
Now, UC Irvine is moving forward with updating their other student housing area known as Middle Earth. Similar to the Mesa Court Expansion, UC Irvine proposes to replace the existing Middle Earth Student Center and Brandywine Dining Commons for a new 7 story multi-use building. The ground floor and second floor would consist of the following: 35,000 sq ft dining commons, 14,000 sq ft for community facilities, 12,000 sq ft for support and ancillary space. The remaining upper five floors would house 500 students in a dormatory setting with two or three occupant rooms. If completed, the project would also provide about 10,000 sq ft of outside space that includes 230 seating spaces for the new dining common.

UC Irvine proposes to carry out the construction in two phases where the first phase would demolish the existing Middle Earth Student Center/Brandywine dining commons. In phase 2, UC Irvine will discontinue the other nearby 10,500 sq ft dining common known as Pippin Commons. In its place, the university plans to temporarily convert the space for the displaced student recreation from Phase 1.
